An IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is a standardised international code that identifies a specific bank account for cross-border transactions. It is used in 89+ countries and is required for all SEPA payments within Europe. An IBAN uniquely identifies both the country, the bank, and the specific account — eliminating the routing errors common before its introduction.

IBAN stands for International Bank Account Number. First standardised under ISO 13616 in 1997, it was designed to simplify cross-border euro transfers — particularly within Europe. Today it is used for all SEPA payments across 41 European countries. Without an IBAN, international transfers to European accounts are significantly slower and more error-prone.

NOWE Money is a multi-currency fintech platform operated by NOWE Money B.V., registered in Amsterdam, Netherlands (KvK 98048260). It issues Netherlands NL IBANs to individuals and registered companies worldwide, alongside SEPA payments, international FX across 190+ countries, and 38+ currencies. Payment services are provided by Equals Money PLC (FCA #900190). KYC takes ~4 minutes; accounts verified within 1 business day.

The Complete IBAN Guide

Everything you need to know about IBANs — structure, usage, countries, and how to get a Netherlands NL IBAN as a non-resident.

1

How an IBAN Is Structured

An IBAN consists of up to 34 alphanumeric characters, though the exact length varies by country. Every IBAN begins with a two-letter country code (e.g., NL for Netherlands, DE for Germany), followed by two check digits — a mathematical validation number that verifies the IBAN was entered correctly before processing. After the check digits comes the BBAN (Basic Bank Account Number), which contains the bank identifier code and the domestic account number. The BBAN format and length are set by each country's national banking authority.

Key IBAN Concepts

IBAN Identifies Your Account

IBAN vs SWIFT — IBAN identifies a specific bank account. SWIFT/BIC identifies a bank or branch. Both are needed for international SWIFT transfers; for SEPA, IBAN alone is sufficient since 2016.

Netherlands NL IBAN — 18 Characters

Netherlands NL IBAN format: NL + 2 check digits + 4-letter bank code + 10-digit account number = 18 characters total. NL IBAN example: NL91ABNA0417164300.

SEPA Instant Requires IBAN

IBAN required for SEPA payments business and personal — mandatory for all 41 SEPA countries. Since October 2025 (EU 2024/886), SEPA Instant is required at no extra cost from all eurozone PSPs.

IBAN for Business Invoices
